Wednesday, February 5, 2020 -- Trump's Address, The Left's Deplorable Day, It's Not Trump -- It's You

Trump's Address

President Trump's State of the Union address last night was one for the history books.  As he often does, this president brought his unique flare to a staid Washington tradition, and left his critics seething and his supporters cheering.

The president boldly declared that "we have rejected the downsizing of America's destiny."  He celebrated record low unemployment for women and minorities, and declared America's manufacturing renaissance and rising wages to be a "blue collar boom."

President Trump proudly defended the sanctity of life by pointing to one of his invited guests, Ellie Schneider.  Noting that Ellie was "one of the earliest premature babies ever to survive," Trump declared that "every human life is a sacred gift from God," and he again called on Congress to ban late-term abortions performed on unborn children like Ellie.

On immigration, Trump slammed the so-called "sanctuary city policies" supported by many progressive politicians, including San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi.  He declared, "The United States of America should be a sanctuary for law-abiding Americans, not criminal aliens."

In other memorable moments, the president promoted a 100 year-old Tuskegee Airman (Congratulations, General McGee!), honored Rush Limbaugh and welcomed home Sgt. Townsend Williams from Afghanistan.

It truly was one of the most remarkable State of the Union addresses I have ever seen.  If you missed it, I urge you to watch it here.

The Left's Deplorable Day

The political left did not have a good day yesterday.  First, progressives proved unable to count votes in Iowa.  Then, they proved themselves unable of observing the most basic levels of decorum and tradition.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi broke tradition by refusing to recite the standard opening at State of the Union addresses introducing the president to the Congress and the country.
She refused to say that it was her "high privilege and distinct honor" to introduce the president.

As the president's speech went on, it became clear that the Pelosi and her fellow Democrats were loath to applaud anything the president had to say.  And it was really obvious when it came to the president's guests.

Ronald Reagan started the tradition of the honoring individual Americans at the State of the Union by highlighting their accomplishments and contributions to our country, and how they benefitted from his policies.

Every president since has continued that practice.  And last night, Donald Trump took it to new heights.  Yet, some Democrats even refused to stand for these heroes.  Others only stood up to walk out.

But the final act of sheer defiance occurred at the end when Nancy Pelosi tore up the president's speech.

She tore up the words that said our best days are still to come.

She tore up the words honoring the historic achievement of women and minorities in this economy.

She tore up the words honoring a 100 year-old Tuskegee Airman and our troops in uniform.

But that's typical of the left.  Progressives don't want to debate the issues. They're just good at tearing everything apart, whether it's our history, our values, our Constitution, our country or the president's speech.

Remember Joe Wilson?  He was the GOP backbencher who was roundly condemned for a brief outburst during one of Obama's State of the Union addresses.  He apologized to President Obama, but nevertheless was formally reprimanded by the full House.

Newt Gingrich thinks Pelosi should be censured.  That's not enough in my view.  I want her permanently removed as Speaker!

I need your help to do that by retaking the House of Representatives this November!

Now We Know

By tearing up the president's address last night, Nancy Pelosi may have resolved something of a mystery regarding her previous meetings with the president.

On a couple of occasions in the past year or so, Pelosi and Democrat leaders went to the White House to meet with the president.  The meetings did not go well, and the Democrats later told reporters that the president threw a temper tantrum and stormed out of the room.

White House officials told a very different story, saying the president was calm, never raised his voice and that it was Pelosi who overreacted.  There were reports that Pelosi threw a written statement back at the president during one of these encounters.

At last night's State of the Union, we saw Pelosi repeatedly shaking her head and mumbling to herself.  It all culminated with her ripping up his speech.  The only thing missing was her throwing it back in his face.

I think we now know the truth of those past meetings.  It wasn't Trump but "Crazy Nancy" losing her cool.

It's Not Trump, It's YOU!

Some people will dismiss all of this by suggesting that Trump simply engenders this kind of scorn.  A different president would get a different reaction.  But as I have repeatedly pointed out, this is what the left does to anyone who fights their radical agenda.

The left smeared Ronald Reagan as a dunce.  I still remember reports of some areas of the country cheering the news of his attempted assassination, just as many progressives are cheering the news of Rush Limbaugh's cancer diagnosis.

George W. Bush was a very decent man.  The left blamed him for the vicious lynching of a black man.  The left accused him of ignoring the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The left said he committed war crimes.  By the time Bush left office, his approval rating was abysmal.

Remember all the times John McCain frustrated conservatives by working with the left opposing the Bush tax cuts, supporting liberal amnesty plans and saving Obamacare?  What did it get him?  A really nice funeral.  Good for him.

While he was alive, the left compared McCain to segregationist George Wallace and accused him of being mentally unstable.

The left smeared Mitt Romney as a racist, as cruel to animals, heartless to the poor and blamed him for the deaths of two women.  (Here and here.)

My point is simply that the left's obscene behavior has nothing to do with Donald Trump.  This is what the left does to ANYONE who fights its radical agenda.

A lot of well-meaning voters still don't fully grasp this.  I don't know how many times I hear complaints about "Trump's tweets" or "Trump's this" or "Trump's that."

We are in a war for the heart and soul of our country. These folks need to come to grips with the progressive movement's insanity!

The left hates Donald Trump because it hates YOU.  And they hate you/us because we resist their radical socialist policies, their bizarre social values, and their extreme anti-American agenda.

By the way, Mitt Romney is evidently more interested in becoming the next McCain than he is in defeating the radical left.  He announced moments ago that he is joining Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi in voting to impeach President Trump.

The Results, Sort Of

Late yesterday afternoon, the Iowa Democrat Party released some of the caucus results.  The partial results, which are still subject to change, show former Mayor Pete Buttigieg narrowly leading Senator Bernie Sanders, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden in fourth place, only a few hundred votes ahead of Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Why the state party chose to release partial figures and not just wait for a complete, final tally is anyone's guess, and no one is really happy about it.  But everyone agrees that Joe Biden is in big trouble.

By the way, the failed app may be the least of the Democrats' troubles.  Commentators are noting that turnout for Monday's caucuses was much lower than expected, leading many to suggest that Democrats may have a serious "enthusiasm gap."
