Santorum Surging

The latest Fox News poll finds Senator Rick Santorum surging into a tie with Governor Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination. In the final two days of polling conducted after Santorum's sweep in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, Santorum and Romney both earned 30% support, followed by Gingrich at 16% and Paul at 15%.

Obama Backs Down, Sort Of

Amid a growing backlash against his assault on religious liberty, Barack Obama announced today that his administration would not compel religious institutions to pay for medical services that they find morally objectionable. Instead, Obama is ordering insurance companies to cover those costs.

According to a White House statement, "The policy also ensures that if a woman works for a religious employer with objections to providing contraceptive services as part of its health plan, the religious employer will not be required to provide contraception coverage, but her insurance company will be required to offer contraceptive care free of charge."

Of course the devil is in the details. Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said "While there may be an openness to respond to some of our concerns, we reserve judgment on the details until we have them." So far it appears as though Planned Parenthood has been appeased.

But this much is certain: Everyone is going to pay more for health insurance. There is no such thing as a "free lunch." Every ObamaCare mandate comes with a cost, and the costs for these "free services" will simply be built into the price of every premium.

This is what happens when big government assumes so much power. "The government that is big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have." This is why ObamaCare must be repealed. This is why Obama must be defeated!

Mandate Example Of Extremism

My friends, don't forget about this issue when you go into the voting booth in 270 days. Remind your friends and family members too. This mandate was a direct assault on religious liberty, and it speaks volumes about Obama's extremism and why we can't afford four more years of this radical administration.

Thankfully, religious leaders of all faiths spoke up loudly and clearly. Statements of outrage and condemnation came from the nation's Catholic leaders, Jewish leaders, Southern Baptist leaders, the National Association of Evangelicals, as well as other faiths and denominations.

Today's Wall Street Journal carries an excellent op-ed by Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, D.C., Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship, and Rabbi Soloveichik, director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University.

And Pastor Rick Warren, a man not given to inflammatory rhetoric, tweeted the following messages this week: "I'm not a Catholic but I stand in 100% solidarity with my brothers & sisters to practice their belief against [government] pressure." "I'd go to jail rather than cave in to a government mandate that violates what God commands us to do. Would you? Acts 5:29."

Here's another reason Obama backed down. According to polling data from Scott Rasmussen, "only 28 percent [of Catholics] believe religious organizations should be required to implement rules that conflict with church doctrine. Sixty-five percent are opposed." In other words, Obama was hemorrhaging Catholic support and putting key states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin, where millions of Catholic voters reside, at risk.

There are reports that Vice President Joe Biden and former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley warned Obama not to do this, and they were right. But instead of respecting religious liberty and the First Amendment, our "brilliant" constitutional law professor president sided with Planned Parenthood and the most extreme pro-abortion elements in his party. Just imagine what will happen if he is reelected.

Obama Putting America At Risk

This morning I read a headline that raised my hopes: "Canada [Prime Minister] Vows To Ensure Key Oil Pipeline Is Built." As you may recall, Canada has been trying to build the Keystone XL pipeline to bring Canadian tar sands oil to our Gulf Coast refineries for several years now. It is a great plan to help create jobs and lessen America's dependence on oil from hostile regimes in the Middle East. But, bowing to the demands of radical environmentalists, Barack Obama has repeatedly blocked the project.

Unfortunately, the article wasn't about the Keystone pipeline. So what pipeline is Harper vowing build? Here's an excerpt of the Reuters article:

"Canada's prime minister on Friday made his strongest comments yet in support of a proposed pipeline from oil-rich Alberta to the Pacific coast… [to] allow Canada to send tankers of crude to China and reduce reliance on the U.S. market. …

"Harper stepped up talk of oil sales to China in the wake of a U.S. decision last month to block TransCanada Corp's proposed Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf Coast of the United States. …'We have abundant supplies of virtually every form of energy. And you know, we want to sell our energy to people who want to buy our energy -- it's that simple,' Harper told a business dinner in Guangzhou."

Obama's rejection of the Keystone pipeline is recklessly irresponsible, and even his former National Security Advisor, Gen. Jim Jones, agrees. In December Gen. Jones told reporters:

"If we get to the point where we cannot bring ourselves to do what is in our national interest, then we are clearly in a period of decline… A nation that fails to secure the energy its citizens and its economic engine need to keep functioning leaves itself vulnerable to external contingencies in a dangerous and uncertain world and to the whims of foreign leaders and other actors who may not always have its interests at heart. The delay, and possible rejection of this pipeline, could have significant and long-range national security implications for our nation."

America cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama!
