WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Former presidential candidate Gary L. Bauer noted Wednesday that despite the losses, values were a winner on election night.
Bauer, chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, made the following statement: "We ' re very concerned and disappointed that Democratic liberals will be running the House and possibly the Senate. These losses however should not be taken as a rejection of conservative values. When the issues stood alone, they almost always prevailed. For example, in 7 out of 8 races, traditional marriage won overwhelmingly. The narrow loss in Arizona was a result of deception and confusion.
"Even domestic partnerships were rejected in Colorado. English as the official language was embraced in Arizona. Reverse discrimination was rejected in
Michigan. Higher taxes on 'big oil' were spurned in California. Private property rights were strengthened in nine states.
"It is telling that almost everyone in this election cycle -- Democrat or Republican -- ran as the choice of Values Voters. Faith, family, love of country were the themes no matter what the party, which shows the strength of this often ignored block of Americans.
"We can't be surprised that 6 years into an administration the normal course of events played out -- losses for the party in power. That has been the pattern throughout American history. What is heartening is that no matter the party, candidates overwhelmingly tried to appeal to the hearts of the Values Voters. Let us hope that their policies will match their promises." |
