BAUER CELEBRATES ALITO CONFIRMATION

01/31/2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Campaign for Working Families Chairman Gary Bauer today offered his congratulations to Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, Martha Ann, and emphasized why it is so important for values voters to remain engaged in the political process.

“In November of 2004, values voters won the right to influence Supreme Court nominations, to end the use of parliamentary stalling tactics in the confirmation process, and to confirm strict constructionists to our courts. Today’s confirmation of Justice Samuel Alito clearly demonstrates what is at stake in the 2006 Senate elections and the 2008 presidential election.

“As we witnessed in yesterday’s unprecedented filibuster vote and in today’s confirmation vote, elections do have consequences. The liberals understood that, which is why Clinton, Kerry and Kennedy launched their futile filibuster effort. While pandering to the radical fringe of their base, they were at least willing to fight for their cause. They also demonstrated the desperate tactics they are prepared to use in order to keep experienced, well-qualified conservative nominees off the bench.

“Today we took an important step toward ending the high court’s hostility toward traditional values, but we still do not have a conservative majority on Supreme Court. Values voters who care deeply about our religious liberty, the right to life, and the sanctity of traditional marriage must remain engaged in the political process.”
