PHILADELPHIA -- Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families chairman and a former Under Secretary of Education in the Reagan administration, issued the following statement today as the Republican Party platform Education and Youth Subcommittee considers the phasing out of the federal Department of Education:
"It is the Democratic Party which has always pushed for the central control of education. It is my hope that the Republican Party will remain true to its long-held view that education policy is best formulated and determined by parents, local school boards, and the states. Members of my party should say clearly and unequivocally that the bureaucratic-laden Department of Education should be phased out. In fact, the Department should be made irrelevant because of the vibrancy of education decisions being made at the state and local levels. Local control in local communities is the best education policy." |
