BAUER TO CONDIT: "RESIGN"

07/20/2001

WASHINGTON -- Gary L. Bauer, Chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, one of America's leading conservative political action committees, today called upon Democratic Congressman Gary Condit of California to resign.

"Representative Condit must resign. He has demonstrated a shocking inability to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Yet he continues to sit as the ranking member of the House Intelligence and National Security subcommittee. At a minimum, I call upon House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt to immediately remove Gary Condit from this sensitive position, which demands fidelity, a character trait in which Congressman Condit is obviously lacking.

"Condit misled police in at least two interviews. Chandra Levy's life may have hinged on crucial information Condit withheld in the early days of this investigation. Yet, he appears to have put his own political career ahead of any other concern.

"Congressman Condit's private behavior has not only crossed the line of common decency, but it may have quite possibily crossed into the realm of criminal conduct. From his Clintonian deceit with police investigators, to charges that he attempted to suborn perjury with Anne Marie Smith, Condit's behavior has brought shame and disrepute upon the House of Representatives.

"The House Ethics Committee should immediately look into possible criminal behavior, obstruction of justice and subordination of perjury, by Congressman Gary Condit.

"And, if Congressman Condit will not resign, as Chairman of a leading pro-family political action committee, I am prepared to devote significant resources toward retiring the Congressman next November."
