TIME HAS COME FOR CLINTON TO HELP STOP INFANTICIDE

04/05/2000

Both Chambers of Congress Support Partial Birth Abortion Ban

WASHINGTON - Gary Bauer, former Republican presidential candidate and Campaign for Working Families founder, today issued the following statement on today's House of Representatives veto-proof vote banning partial birth abortion:

"The American people and both house of Congress overwhelmingly support a ban on the hideous procedure known as partial-birth abortion," said Bauer. "Twice the House and Senate have passed bills banning this horrific procedure that is tantamount to infanticide. The only obstacle to this ban becoming law is President Bill Clinton, who twice has vetoed bills outlawing this odious practice. \

"President Clinton has promised a third veto if the partial-birth abortion ban reaches his desk, which appears to be a virtual certainty, as the margin of passage in both the House and Senate increased on both prior votes on the ban in 1996 and 1998.

"The President's defense of this procedure is indefensible. Its sole purpose is to ensure the death of a viable baby. There is no medical justification for this procedure in which a baby is partially delivered through the birth canal, whereupon the doctor pierces its skull, removes the brain by suction and then crushes the infant's head.

"By renewing his veto threat, Bill Clinton once again has shown that he is in thrall to the radical abortion-rights groups. Bill Clinton, the first pro-abortion President, has consistently opposed even the most modest restrictions on abortion-on-demand in all nine months of pregnancy, indeed right up to the very moment of birth.

"The vast majority of Americans believe deeply in the sanctity of life and are justifiably horrified by this revolting procedure. I believe that all our children should be welcomed into the world and protected by the law. That a baby can be killed legally at the very moment of its birth is a moral stain upon our country that must -- and someday will -- be removed," said Bauer.
