OPPOSING ABORTION KEY TO BUSH'S SUCCESS SOCIAL ISSUES FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE GARY BAUER SPEAKS IN IRVINE.

03/19/2001

By MARTIN WISCKOL , The Orange County Register

Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer continued to argue that battling abortion is the most important issue facing the presidency, as he addressed a warmly receptive audience of 600 at Mariner's Church on Sunday night.

Bauer urged listeners to fight evil in society by asserting their Christianity.

"When you can have same-sex marriages in Vermont, somebody's values have won," said the longtime activist, who dropped out of last year's presidential race after the New Hampshire primary. "When you have condoms distributed in the schools, somebody's values have prevailed. We must make our values known."

President George W. Bush must relentlessly oppose abortion, Bauer said, ensuring that each Supreme Court nominee shares that opposition.

"If he gets everything else right and fails this, he fails his presidency," said Bauer, drawing applause.

After dropping out of the presidential race, Bauer surprised some Christians by endorsing Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., rather than Bush. He explained Sunday that of the two, only McCain promised that all his high-court nominees would oppose abortion rights. Bush has repeatedly said that he would have no litmus test for his choices.

Bauer is now chairman of a Washington, D.C.-based political action committee, Campaign for Working Families, which places opposition to abortion at the top of its agenda.
