BAUER ISSUES STATEMENT ON VERMONT'S SAME-SEX "CIVIL UNIONS" LEGISLATION

03/17/2000

WASHINGTON - Gary Bauer, former Republican presidential candidate and Campaign for Working Families founder, today issued the following statement regarding Vermont's Same-Sex "Civil Unions" legislation currently working through the Vermont State Senate.

"The approval of same-sex marriage in everything but name by the Vermont House of Representatives seriously erodes the foundational institution of our society. Redefining marriage in bizarre and novel ways at a time when the family already has been weakened and is under attack is profoundly short-sighted.

"The action by the Vermont House in obedience to a state supreme court order is yet another example of the moral relativism that has overtaken our country. For more than 4,000 years, marriage in Judeo-Christian cultures has been understood to be the union under God of one man and one woman. If marriage can be redefined willy-nilly to encompass homosexual and lesbian relationships, then on what basis can we preserve the prohibitions against polygamy and incest? If a man is to be permitted to marry a man, then why not two women? This is no more far-fetched than the prospect of legalized same-sex marriage was just a decade ago.

"The American people do not support the radical redefinition of marriage. It is clear that the militant homosexual lobby shopped around for a sufficiently liberal state court to command same-sex unions by the raw exercise of judicial fiat. The people of Vermont would not have freely chosen to embrace such "civil unions" -- as same-sex marriage is being euphemistically called -- were it not for the dictates of unelected, unaccountable judges.

"Marriage is the root of the family and the foundation of a happy, prosperous social order. We tamper with this essential institution at our own peril. The action of the Vermont House simply makes a mockery of marriage. Thankfully, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act and more than 30 states -- most recently California with voter approval of Proposition 22 -- have adopted laws that prohibit recognition of such actions as that contemplated by Vermont." Clinton and the China Lobby to lead us to another Munich."
