COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY: 62 DAYS UNTIL THE 2010 ELECTIONS!
More Israeli Orphans
The White House is gearing up for a big day tomorrow as President Obama prepares to “jump start” Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. The goal of the talks is the creation of a Palestinian state that, as we are endlessly told, will “live side-by-side with Israel in peace and security.” Sounds good, but if history is any guide, it isn’t likely to happen.
The brutal murders yesterday of four Israeli civilians near Hebron by Hamas jihadists demonstrate why countless peace talks have not produced Middle East peace or security. Many Palestinians don’t want either.
The four murdered Israelis included a couple with six children and a pregnant woman. There is evidence that the Hamas attackers videotaped the blood-soaked bodies of the victims, no doubt to use as a recruiting tool among the seething masses of Jew-haters who dream not of the creation of a Palestinian state, but the destruction of a Jewish state.
Hamas issued a statement referring to the attack on four civilians as a “heroic operation in Hebron.” Several thousand cheering fanatics poured into the streets of the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip in a scene reminiscent of previous celebrations of terror attacks in Israel and on 9/11.
Jews living in Judea and Samaria mourned last night and then announced their response to Hamas’ brutality: they would resume building homes for their families. A council of families in the region said, “They shoot and we build. Each does as he believes.” That is a great summary of why peace is so elusive. Israelis have built a nation based on democratic values. The Palestinians have nurtured and promoted hate.
The next time you hear someone describe the proposed Palestinian state, ask him what kind of state it will be. The evidence is overwhelming that it will be “Hamastan” – dedicated to the death of Israelis and aligned with Iran, Syria and others in the ongoing war against the West.
“A Strange Muddle”
That’s how one columnist for the left-leaning Slate described Obama’s Iraq speech. As predicted, the president praised the troops, and I’m glad he did. But otherwise, it was “a strange muddle.”
Obama was in a difficult position last night – celebrating the outcome of a war he vehemently opposed when its success was due to a surge of reinforcements, which he also vehemently opposed. He tried to walk this tightrope between celebrating America’s success in Iraq and adhering to the liberal line by blaming the state of the economy on the Iraq war. But bringing up the economy in a speech about the war seemed self-serving and distracted from the main issue.
If the president wants to have a debate about spending, then he’s got even bigger problems. A recent report from the Congressional Budget Office finds that Obama’s failed stimulus plan cost more than the Iraq war!
And where was the bravado and charisma for which he is so well known? Where was the soaring rhetoric that had folks swooning on the campaign trail? I’ve seen a lot of presidential speeches in my 30 years in Washington. But what I saw last night was a man who is losing confidence, befuddled by foreign and domestic issues.
The Signs Of Surrender
It is not news that Arizona is experiencing a major problem with illegal immigration and drug smuggling. The state made headlines several months ago for daring to enforce laws against illegal immigration, and the Obama Administration sued the state. It is also investigating Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and is even suing the state’s cash-strapped community colleges.
But I suspect many Americans will be surprised by what else the federal government is doing. According to yesterday’s Washington Times, “The federal government has posted signs along a major interstate highway in Arizona, more than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers…”
Rep. Lamar Smith, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, blasted the signs as “an insult to the citizens of border states.” Michael Cutler, a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, went even further, saying, “How much more land will our nation cede to the drug dealers and terrorists? …At the rate we are going, the ‘Red, White and Blue’ of the American flag will be replaced with a flag that is simply white – the white flag of surrender.”
